Popular Traditions and Events
Tuscania is a very lively city, rich in events and
popular manifestations. And by good reason it was assigned in 2003
by the Italian Touring Club and the Agricultural Department of the
Lazio Region the 'Bandiera Arancione' (Orange Flag) of the Province
of Viterbo, and 'Il tesoro del Lazio' (the Treasure of Lazio), a
symbolic award of quality given to only 54 municipalities in the
whole of Italy. 'Orange' tourism includes gourmet tourist itineraries
through the towns and villages of Lazio, highlighting their art,
handicrafts, environment and exhibitions plus the tasting of typical
products.
Tuscania's popular traditions are naturally closely associated with
the religious calendar and bear the imprint of the farming and Catholic
culture which moulded this community.
So we have the feasts of the Patron Saints, the Good Friday processions,
the processions of the Madonna Addolorata and the Madonna del Rosario,
together with other dates in the religious calendar associated with
the Virgin, such as the Madonna del Cerro, Madonna della Neve and
Madonna della Pace.
And even the non-religious Fiera di Maggio (May Fair) has been associated
with the celebration of the Madonna Liberatrice, while the ' Sagra
della Frittella' (Fritter Fair) is held on the day commemorating
S. Antonio Abate.
The most important traditional festivities in Tuscania are the May
Fair and that of the SS Martiri (Holy Martyrs) in August, to which
we must add the horse fair 'Nitriti di Primavera' (Neighs of Spring)
and a rich calendar of summer events such as 'Tuscania Città
della Musica' (Tuscania, the City of Music) and 'Tuscania Teatro'
(Tuscania Theatre).
