Monte Casoli di Bomarzo Nature Reserve
Monte Casoli di Bomarzo Nature Reserve
The Monte Casoli di Bomarzo Nature Reserve, set up in 1999 by Regional
Law No. 30, at the present time covers some 285 hectares (soon to
be extended to more than 700 hectares) all falling within the municipality
of Bomarzo. Managing agency is the Province of Viterbo which, together
with the municipality of Bomarzo, implements a policy with the declared
aims of protecting the territory and enhancing its natural and cultural
resources, safeguarding and rehabilitating natural habitats, preserving
animal and plant species, promoting the economic and social development
of the local communities involved and enhancing natural resources
for educational and recreational purposes.
Bomarzo, one of the most attractive centres of the Tuscia area,
is situated between the north-eastern slopes of the Monti Cimini
and the wide valley of the Tiber, in a territory where still today
local communities live in harmony with the natural environment.
The scenery of this protected area, strongly marked by the geological
configuration of the zone, varies from woods to uplands at one time
used for pasture, cultivated areas and valleys of varying depth.
But besides its natural value, the whole area is important from
an historical and archaeological point of view. Indeed, it offers
a whole host of remains and settlements dating from Etruscan, Roman
and Medieval times, which are still today the subject of study and
research campaigns organised by major Italian and foreign universities.
